Good travel starts at the booking screen. On a US carrier, a trained Service Dog rides in the cabin with you at no charge, so you are not shopping for a pet fee. You are shopping for a seat where your dog can lie down at your feet without pushing into the aisle or your neighbor. A bulkhead row or a window seat often gives the most floor room. After you book, add a note to the reservation that you are bringing a Service Dog and call the airline accessibility line if anything is unclear.

This is the stage people skip, and skipping it is what turns a smooth trip stressful. Under the federal rule, a US airline may require you to submit a short government form before you fly. It is called the DOT Service Animal Air Transportation Form. On it you confirm that your dog is trained, healthy and will behave. For a flight that runs eight hours or longer the airline may also ask you to sign a relief attestation, a second short form about the dog handling a long trip in a sanitary way. The airline can ask for these up to forty-eight hours before departure, so two days out is the moment to send them. Then map your relief breaks and pack the dog's bag.

Give yourself extra time today. A relaxed handler makes a relaxed dog, and both of those start at an unhurried check-in, not in a sprint to the gate. At the counter, show your signed form if the airline did not collect it online. At the security checkpoint, your dog walks through the screening with you on leash. An officer may pat the dog down by hand rather than send it through the body scanner alone, and your dog should stay calm for that. Once you are through, look up the airport relief area near your gate so the dog can go one more time before boarding.

In the air, the goal is calm and quiet. Your dog rides on the floor within your own foot space, not in a seat and not in the aisle. Guide it into a down, give it the familiar mat to lie on and let it rest. A trained Service Dog should sit through engine noise, the food cart and a cabin full of strangers without barking, lunging or jumping up. The crew may ask you two simple things, whether the dog is needed for a disability and what task it is trained to do. They cannot ask about your diagnosis and they cannot make the dog perform. Keep treats and praise quiet, skip the loud toys and the flight becomes the boring kind, which is exactly what you want.

You made it. Let the rush of standers-up clear before you bring your dog into the aisle, then walk off at an easy pace. Your first job in the new airport is the same as the last one in the old airport, find a relief area so the dog can stretch and go. After a few hours of holding still, that break is the kindest thing you can do. Then collect any bags, step outside and let your dog reset before the next leg or the ride home. The big first flight is now a thing your dog has simply done.
